Fire Emblem Engage Interview Emphasizes New Player Appeal & Streamlined Story Approach

Nintendo has published the first part of an interview they conducted with members of the Intelligent System staff behind the upcoming Fire Emblem Engage, featuring Director Tsutomu Tei, Producer Masahiro Higuchi, Nintendo Producer Genki Yokota, and Nintendo Director Kenta Nakanishi.

This interview primarily introduces the Fire Emblem series alongside elucidating how this entry differs from the previous mainline game, Three Houses. The last title’s multiple-path story structure was overwhelming, so the team opted for a more traditional storytelling approach this time. They also “wanted to create a game that appeals to a broader audience so that even players who are not yet aware of the fun of turn-based tactical RPG games would find it interesting just by looking at its visuals.”

Depictions of the protagonist, Alear, were quite challenging to conjure since there was an intention to have them not appear courageous. Still, that vulnerability was supposedly over-emphasized in the early stages. Instead, Alear seems fragile at the game’s start but gradually grows braver.

Lastly, the Engage mechanic comprising the involvement of characters from previous games is also discussed, emphasizing how its incorporation is meant to make tactical decisions more quickly rewarding so beginner players feel motivated enough to keep progressing.

The second part of this interview will be shared tomorrow.

Fire Emblem Engage 3 3

Fire Emblem Engage is releasing for Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023.

This game follows the new protagonist Alear after their mother, Lumiere, seemingly perishes and imparts them with the mission of utilizing special rings to bring peace to the world.

These rings summon notable heroes from other Fire Emblem titles, including fan favorites such as Lyn, Corrin, Marth, and Byleth. And aside from granting evident gameplay benefits and alterations, they also converse with the new Engage characters, acting as vehicles for potential growth.
