Fire Emblem Engage Interview Discusses Design Challenges & Efforts; Concept Art & Sketches Shared
Nintendo has published the second part of an interview they conducted with members of the Intelligent System staff behind the upcoming Fire Emblem Engage, featuring Director Tsutomu Tei, Producer Masahiro Higuchi, Nintendo Producer Genki Yokota, and Nintendo Director Kenta Nakanishi.
The efforts of the game’s character designer, Mika Pikazo, are emphasized, with there even being several revealed concept illustrations. Her eagerness and the brightness of her work are highlighted alongside the fact that, at least for Yokota, they resemble how the early Fire Emblem games relied on colors above all else for character identification.
This entry aimed to prioritize an enhanced presentation, hence why 3D models are the norm this around rather than 2D artwork. Of course, there were numerous difficulties with such an ambitious goal, such as the overall quality of the models needing to be consistent for feasibility. In fact, the main characters received at least six revisions ahead of completion.
The eyes, in particular, were a challenge to accurately reflect in-game from Pikazo’s illustrations, leading to the team dissembling the components while receiving detailed feedback for each character’s face. It was a lengthy process but assuredly worthwhile.
For a deeper dive into more granular facets regarding Fire Emblem Engage’s designs, view the second part of the interview on Nintendo’s official website.

Fire Emblem Engage is releasing for Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023.
This game follows the new protagonist Alear after their mother, Lumiere, seemingly perishes and imparts them with the mission of utilizing special rings to bring peace to the world.
These rings summon notable heroes from other Fire Emblem titles, including fan favorites such as Lyn, Corrin, Marth, and Byleth. And aside from granting evident gameplay benefits and alterations, they also converse with the new Engage characters, acting as vehicles for potential growth.
